Where to eat?

Travelling to a country as beautiful as New Zealand will make you want to get the most out of every day. Having dinner at 6 pm might be a little too early in that case. Especially on a warm summer evening when there still is so much to do. Here are a few of the best places in Christchurch where you can have dinner till late in the evening.

 

Little High Eatery

A quite new establishment, Little High Eatery has quickly gained popularity among locals and travelers alike. It’s the perfect place if you and your friends can’t decide on where to eat since they have many options to choose from. A collaboration of eight different restaurants with choices ranging from dumplings, barbecue grilled meat, curry, noodles, burritos, sushi, burgers and pizza, as well as sweet treats or drinks at the bar. Little High Eatery is a great place to have lunch with friends or late night dinner since for two – they are open until 10 pm from Sunday to Wednesday, but until 12 am the rest of the week.
 

Bessie

This restaurant is a great option if you are on a meat diet. They have a huge collection of meat hanging on display in their special dry-aged cabinet. The displayed meat is aged for days in specific low humidity and low temperature conditions . When ordered, they finish it off in an imported Spanish charcoal oven. This comes with a selection of New Zealand’s best wines. Their mission is to bring the highest quality dining experience in the vibrant city of Christchurch. Bessie is one of the best places to have a late night dinner. They are open till midnight.

 

King of Snake

145 Victoria Street

Despite being on a different continent, you can’t argue that Southeast Asian food is some of the best in the world. If you’re into Thai or Vietnamese cuisine, then King of Snake is your way to go. They’re open ’till 2 am and have an award-winning Asian fusion menu. They also have vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. They have various seating options with the long low table being a popular one amongst groups. Their cocktails list alone is worth mentioning.

 

Mexicano’s

131 Victoria Street

Even though it’s only located a few steps from the King of Snake Asian restaurant, you will experience the kitchen of a totally different continent. Mexicano’s will make you feel like you’ve stepped into Central America by offering you some of the very best Mexican dishes. Experiencing Mexico includes the late-night dining culture since this restaurant doesn’t close before 2 am. Tacos, tostadas, and guacamole are only a few of the options to choose from. Mexicano’s is considered the best Mexican/ Latino restaurant in Christchurch.

 

Smash Palace and Brick Farm

172 High Street

Smash Palace is quite new, since it was started after the earthquake destroyed the old bar Goodbye Blue Monday in 2011. It is located just around the corner from Dux Central and even though it’s mainly a bar for a casual night out, they are specialized in burgers as well. They take it quite seriously since they claim it to be the best burgers in New Zealand. The restaurant is open ’till 1 pm and is a great late-night dining place if you’re looking for something more casual. You will not only be able to enjoy some of the best burgers but you will be enjoying them in a place with lots of Christchurch history.

 

Chinwag Eathai

104 Victoria Street

While the interior of Chinwag Eathai is a combination of western and eastern style, the dishes served are traditional Thai. The menu has a wide range of food varying from curries to wok-fried meals. The restaurant is considered an icon on the Christchurch restaurant scene and can be considered for late night dining since it doesn’t close before 2 am. They serve modern plates, designed to be shared, so it’s a good dining experience if you choose to come with friends or if you want to have a romantic dinner while the sun sets over the city.

 

Fiddlesticks Restaurant & Bar

48 Worcester Street

If you are looking for a more sophisticated dining experience, the Fiddlesticks Restaurant & Bar might be a good option, at least if you are into the refined cuisine. Of course, this is only suitable if you’re not traveling on a budget since most dishes are quite pricey. In exchange, you will get high-quality service and food. They serve great pasta as well as delicious meat and seafood. It’s worth mentioning that Fiddlesticks is a great place for a romantic dinner, especially when seated by the fire in the winter times
